In 1963 I purchased my first bicycle, a purple Schwinn Varsity 10-spd. Being the youngest of 4 children, whatever bike I rode up till then was well broken-in by the time it fit me. I worked for months delivering newspapers to earn the $70 that it cost to buy my new Schwinn, but the hard work made me appreciate the bike even more. The bike was my pride and joy—it was so much more than a toy, it meant freedom, freedom to go where I wanted, when I wanted. After a year or two of hard use it finally needed a repair, which I couldn't do myself. The bike needed a new freewheel and I didn't have the special tool needed to take the old one off. I took the bike back to my friendly neighborhood Schwinn store from where I purchased the bike. Well, when I picked my Schwinn up the freewheel had been replaced, but the mechanic didn't clean off the spoke protector and I also had to walk the bicycle to the nearest gas station to get air for the tires—I never took the bicycle back again, and I never forgot the experience. Since 1976 I have owned Motorless Motion and have tried to put the customer first. Unfortunately the business is big enough that I have to hire employees, but they have all heard the above story. If you are unhappy with Motorless Motion, an employee, our customer service, a repair, or anything at all, please feel free to contact me. I'll do anything within reason to make you, the customer, happy.
Terry Quast, Owner
Growing up at the bicycle store, and hearing this story more times than I care to tell, the value of making the customer happy, and taking care of their needs first, is one that has been ingrained in me. I remember being young and telling new employees that every bike needed air and lube on the chain before it left the store, and although I'm sure they hated a young girl telling them what to do, it was the beginnings of my taking over the family business.
After college I tried my hand at event planning, and although I loved what I did, I didn't enjoy the work environment I was in, so I packed up my car, and drove home to figure out what I should do with my life. My dad, not wanting me to sit around doing nothing, suggested I help out at the bike shop until I figured out what it was I wanted to do. And although when I left Mt. Pleasant in 2001 I swore I would never move back, and never have anything to do with the bike shop ever again, I surprised everyone, including myself. Not only was I good at working at the bike shop. I loved it! Every customer I helped find that "perfect" bike, every time I took a trip across town on my bike and waved to my neighbors, customers, and friends it put a smile on my face.
As I was falling more and more in love with running the bike shop, my dad was falling in love with the idea of being able to take vacations, and work on only the jobs he really loves doing. So here we are, Father to Daughter, but always keeping the same values and morals that have always held strong: Treat the customer the way you would like to be treated. This means taking time to talk to the customer, answer their questions, and give them the information needed to make decisions. If you have any concerns, requests, or comments please share them with me, and I will do my best to make you a happy customer.
